We did a great workout on Monday and Tuesday, and even though I was reluctant in the past to rest I finally surrendered to the power of active rest and yes – passive rest too when I needed, especially after a month worth of hard training, a weekend off will give you not only physical energy but also a great emotional boost. I actually miss working out and look forward to it when I rest accordingly.
Practice and research shows that the majority of fitness enthusiasts, athletes, and bodybuilders know that getting enough rest after exercise is essential to peak optimal performance, but many still over train and feel guilty when they take a day off.
Here is the low down on the body restorative power when you take an active or passive day off. The body repairs and strengthens itself in the time between workouts, and continuous training can actually weaken even the strongest of us and take a toll on immunity – getting cold, flu, headaches; leads to injury – shoulder impingement, torn ACL, sprains; and worst of all – depression, loss of interest in the things that usually brings us joy, and apathy towards exercise. Thus, with all those symptoms, do not be expecting the result that you are looking for or excitement that once you had when hitting the gym, track, or tennis courts. Here are the reason why:
- Rest is physically necessary so that the muscles can repair, rebuild and strengthen.
- Maintaining a better balance between home, work and fitness goals.
And for all over trained fitness lovers, I used to run 120 miles a week (yes I ran a marathon distance every Saturday and 6 days a week 1 1/2 hour runs), plus took classes, and did weight training. That is when my knees, shoulder, and hip started to give out. Until I could not do what I like any more.
Also, active rest does not mean walking from the couch to the fridge. You can enjoy a jumping on a trampoline with your kids (my son’s favorite), swim, a bike ride, yoga, pilates, hula dance, or stretching (foam roller and myofascial massage).
So today, I am going for a walk and doing restorative yoga.
Have a great day.
