Top 3 Secrets For Making Homemade Yogurt A Success {GAPS, SCD, Paleo, Primal, Vegan, Gluten Free}

It has been so long since I published a post it feels very awkward and unnatural but in the light of current events with Alfie Evans (barbaric and unethical child murder in public eye that’s at least what I took away from that so please be respectful to my option as everyone is entitled to one) I decided to come back to blogging to share my story about my daughter. No. It is not the same in terms of depth and breadth of injustice. And before you jump to conclusions, I am not seeking attention to piggy back from what happen. I just cannot sit on sidelines if there is some how a chance I can share our story and help other parents in need. Because when my daughters issues started (e.f., bleeding during bowl movements, dystonic body movements, spasms, and etc.) I searched the web and came short. Nothing definite. No help from doctors, just do not worry she will grow out of it or you are imagining things to just drugs. So I started putting things together myself through trial and error.

There is much to be said and a lot more coming in future post but for now I will be focusing on something that helped not only my daughter but my whole family. It is—Homemade SCD/GAPS Yogurt. But not just any yogurt but one made from coconut.

You see, baby Nina was born totally healthy. No issues. She even had her amniotic sack intact. I know the doctor was very surprised as this does not happen often. They day I was in labor, they were trying to figure out what to do since I had allergic reaction to ampenicillin and I was supposed to be treated with penicillin for an hour before birth but the nurse really could not put the drug request through since she was worried about possible side effects. Bless her heart. I got very fortunate to have a carrying nurse both times I was giving birth. Well anyway, baby Nina was born. No issues. All good.

I ate cheese, bread, nightshades, nuts, apples, and all I wanted. Until the vaccine shots. Originally, I did not want to do any vaccines at all but has a hard time finding a doctor who would take me as a patient. So we took the bullet and went ahead after a lot of heartache from my side and did he vaccination shoots. Here started the trouble. I noticed changes right away. First, was allergy to gluten that came up. Then she started bleeding when I eat any diary and then nuts. Moreover, I saw clear developmental set back every time we went in for another shoot. She already could say five mama, papa, bro bro, dead and baba (grandma) words. Then she stopped completely. Nothing, no cuing, no talking. Nothing.

As days went by she would start picking the sounds back up and then it was time for another shot. And she would stop again. Same thing happened with trying to raise her head and rolling and standing and walking. When the last shot was given to my little one was back in September she developed Sandifer Syndrome and stopped walking and went back to crawling the next day after a shoot. I had to put my foot down and say no more. I was scared what would happen next. I can go on and will post another blog post on the timeline and issues specifically since there is a lot tot all about.

But for now back to SCD/GAPS yogurt. With milk and nuts out of question I had to go for coconut. I never liked store bought coconut yogurt but yogurt was the first step in both Specific Carbohydrate Diet (here is the book that I used: Breaking the Vicious Cycle: Intestinal Health Through Diet) and Gut and Psychology Syndrome (GAPS) diet (here is the book that I used: Gut and Psychology Syndrome Book). I highly recommend getting both books. They are complimentary to each other although some info does overlap, I definitely used and still refer back to both. The reason they have similar info in some cases is that GAPS protocol is based on the SCD diet protocol. Moreover, I tried using online forums and info but books really brought it all together.

Secret #1: Follow the recipe timing and cooking directions in the Breaking the Vicious Cycle: Intestinal Health Through Diet) and Gut and Psychology Syndrome (GAPS) diet (here is the book that I used: Gut and Psychology Syndrome Book) books for the best gut healing yogurt.

I did look into the recipes online since there are options to make the yogurt thicker or sweeter but the taste and texture was not what I liked. So I finally came up with my own formula that does it for me. (Stay tuned for the recipe. I will be posting one for milk, one for nut, and one for coconut yogurt options. Will be a great recipe addition for anyone with allergies or not). Experimenting with different recipes allowed me to come up with something that satisfies my taste buds so while I am sharing my recipe I do encourage you to try different versions.

Luvele yougurt maker

When doing research I realized that some recipes called for just warmed up the milk while others for yogurt makers. I originally got Vita Clay 2 quart yogurt maker but since then settled on the Luvele Pure Yogurt Maker. It comes with three temperature settings and a timer. Being busy, I definitely value those features. I also got an xtra 2L Luvele glass jar which allows me to keep making yogurt every day since it takes time for it to be done.

If you are on a tight budget here is another wallet friendly alternative is  VitaClay 2-in-1 Yogurt Maker and Personal Slow Cooker (2 quart or 4 cup). I also got a large one —VitaClay Organic Multi-Cooker bonus Yogurt Maker (8 cups). I use those two for my family members who can tolerate milk since baby Nina is allergic to it and I cannot allow cross-contamination. Plus a large size allows me to make ahad for several days. Which worked for me since I bought this one first and did not want to just waste the money. It also works great and I set them up together so they are done at the same time.

Vita Clay Small

But I do say it myself that if you invest int he Luvele yogurt maker you will not regret and, by the way, it also comes in a style that has 4 x 400 ml jars as opposed to one 2L jar. That can be convenient option where you have them all portioned out and you will not have to buy single server storage jars. You can get this portion friendly alternative here by following the link: Luvele Pure Yogurt Maker | 4x 400ml Jars SCD & GAPS DIET Yoghurt maker 24 Hour.

Secret #2: Get the best yogurt maker for your needs. Choose among the leaders in the market Luvele Pure Yogurt Maker (2 liter single glass jar), Luvele Pure Yogurt Maker (4 x 400 ml jars option), or VitaClay 2-in-1 Yogurt Maker and Personal Slow Cooker (2 quart or 4 cup)

Once you got your methodology and yogurt maker the last but not the least is the probiotic. There are a lot of commercial yogurts and probiotics tablets available but not all of them are created equal. Moreover, according to Dr. Elaine Gottschall, the author of

SCD Probiotics
Klaire Labs – L-Acidophilus SCD Compliant 100 vcaps

theBreaking the Vicious Cycle: Intestinal Health Through Diet not all pro-bitics are beneficial and a lot of them can high-jack your gut flora and multiple without a way to control them.  o you will be bouncing from one issue to the next. A lot is still unknown but what she found out is L-Acidophilus seem to be the best option for healing and is well controlled by our bodies where it does not take over. According to her research she says that the very popular probiotic that can be found in all commercial yogurts and pills is Bifido probiotics  and it just takes over your gut and without a way to control naturally. She goes into detail as to why and how about the probiotics, you will be able to really dive into this subject in her book.  Of course I can write things up but why not go directly to the source to the person who created and this healing diet and really take in what she has to offer through years of research.

So armed with that knowledge plus with the fact that my daughter has Allergic Colitis and milk, nuts, corn, soy, and a few other things are out of question I found a great probiotic that ticks off all the boxes—SCD Probiotics (Klaire Labs – L-Acidophilus SCD Compliant 100 vcaps). I started with just 3 pills as it takes time for you body to get used to the new little soldiers 🙂 who are working on healing your gut. Plus, this ones are vegan if you are not consuming meat and dairy.

Secret #3: Type of probiotics matter. Here are two options legal for SCD and GAPS diet: (1)SCD Probiotics (Klaire Labs – L-Acidophilus SCD Compliant 100 vcaps) and (2) Yo Gourmet Freeze Dried Yogurt Starter . They will give you the most for your buck in terms of gut healing power.

Yo Gourmet Yougurt starter

But before I found those one mentioned above I also use (for my family members who can tolerate milk and do not have other allergies) the

Yo Gourmet Freeze Dried Yogurt Starter – 1 Box Containing 6 Each 5 Gram Packets. This yogurt brand is also legal. You have to get this specific product because Yo Gourment have other which are not SCD or GAPS legal. If you are not able to get either probiotics above, you have to make sure it is freeze dried to ensure that probitics are still active as they are not shell stable and have to be in a temperature control environment for both storage and delivery.

So here you go. Short and sweet and this is how I like my posts. And just as promised i am working on putting together SCD/GAPS yogurt recipes, with Coconut Yogurt recipe being first one.
